Painless Disease?

Patients come to our office and question how they can have periodontal disease and have no pain.  Yes, it is possible to have periodontal disease and have no pain or symptoms.   Potential warning signs include the following: swollen and or bleeding gums; persistent bad breath or bad taste;  and teeth that are getting loose or feel different when you  bite together. These are the most common but not the only warning signs.   

There are various reasons why periodontal disease develops. Our life habits or risk factors that contribute greatly to both the cause and treatment of this disease.  Risk factors that common are poor oral hygiene, the use of tobacco products including smokless, crooked or misaligned teeth, systemic illnesses, pregnancy, medications, and one we do not control genetics. The single risk factor you control is oral hygiene.  Focus on controlling plaque with thourough brushing and daily flossing.  Cleaning between you teeth daily is very important, because this is the areas in our mouth more commonly affected by the dieseae.  Impeccable homecare is your greatest weapon to avoid have periodontal disese.   

Periodontal diseas is treated more successfully when diagnosed early. Routine dental visits allow your dentist to monitor your periodontal health and offer you advice on how to have great healthy oral hygiene habits.
